The Photographing Eastside Transformation and Legacy (PETAL) Project is a Theater of Inclusion program commissioned by the 2012 Indianapolis Super Bowl Host Committee.

It is designed to assist youth of the Near Eastside explore the issue of legacy and document the transformation of their neighborhood during the 2012 Super Bowl Legacy Project.

The PETAL Project uses digital photography as a way of helping young people observe the investment being made in their community and provides an opportunity to think deeply about how they can contribute, individually and collectively, to ongoing growth. Most of these young people will continue to live in this neighborhood long after the 2012 Super Bowl. It is our desire to equip and empower them to use positive leadership to shape the legacy of the Near Eastside after game day.

Through the PETAL Project, youth participants:

  • explore themes of community, leadership, transformation, and legacy
  • reflect on their experience of the Near Eastside, express their aspirations
for the neighborhood, and consider their role in providing leadership
  • consider the connection between their personal legacy and the legacy of
    their community
  • learn to use a digital camera, written word, and spoken word to
communicate the transformation of the Near Eastside
